Why is Lipoprotein A not retested?

Understanding Lipoprotein(a) Testing

One common question we receive from members is why Lipoprotein(a), often referred to as Lipo A, is included in your initial diagnostic panel but is not retested during your quarterly follow-ups.

To provide transparency into our clinical approach, here is the rationale behind our testing protocol.

Why is Lipo (A) only tested once?

Lipoprotein(a) is a genetically determined biomarker. Unlike other lipid markers, such as LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, or triglycerides, which fluctuate based on your diet, exercise routine, stress levels, and lifestyle choices, Lipo (A) levels remain remarkably stable throughout your life.

Because Lipo A is determined by your genetics, it is not significantly impacted by the health optimization protocols we implement. Since its levels do not typically change in response to diet, exercise, or most medications, retesting this marker every few months does not provide additional actionable data for your health plan.

Our Clinical Philosophy

At Lifeforce, we believe in testing biomarkers that provide actionable insights. We prioritize your recurring blood panels for markers that are sensitive to lifestyle changes. This allows our clinical team to:

  • Track your progress toward your health goals.
  • Identify which adjustments in your protocol are working.
  • Make data-driven decisions that empower you to optimize your health.

Since Lipo A does not fluctuate, we reserve your recurring lab slots for the biomarkers where we can see change, measure your progress, and help you take control of your health journey.

If you still wish to test Lipo A

While we do not routinely retest Lipo A as part of the Lifeforce clinical protocol, we understand that some members prefer to keep a personal log of all their genetic markers for their own records or to share with their Primary Care Physician (PCP).

If you would like to have your Lipo A tested again, you have two convenient options:

  1. Discuss with your PCP: Your Primary Care Physician can determine if additional Lipo A testing is appropriate for your broader medical history.
  2. Independent Services: You can utilize direct-to-consumer lab services, such as QuestHealth, which allow you to order specific tests like Lipo A independently.

If you have further questions about how your specific biomarkers are selected for your recurring labs, please reach out to your clinical team via your portal. We are here to ensure you feel confident and informed every step of the way.
